I am a huge fan of Great Cow Basic. GCB is a full programming system for MicroChip PIC processors and Atmel (now owned by MicroChip) processors. It produces a fully compiled (not interpreted) .hex file ready for programming into the target device. I use GCB on my Mac for programming my own designs.
